Welcome to the Future Creatives Initiative

Before I dive deep into the everything Future Creatives Initiative, I’d like enlighten you with some facts about the film industry... specifically, women in the film industry.
In the top 100 grossing films of 2017, Women represented:

and yet…

This doesn’t make much sense, right? How do women encompass 50% of all film viewers, yet nowhere near close to 50% of filmmakers in key creative roles making those films?
In saying this, there are some great opportunities out there to help female Filmmakers take a big step into the industry and begin to establish their careers, but we believe there can always be more done.

Taival Films wants to offer that platform for women; to share their thoughts and stories through film and find the courage to take that first, intimidating step into a lasting, successful career.

Why? Well, According to Screen Australia, only 21% of Australian Screenwriters are female. This percentage would be greater if women were more often granted a seat at the film-industry-table amongst men, as equals.

And just to reflect on the gender pay gap..

Taival Films, in collaboration with MWFF, want to offer a seat at the table for women passionate about sharing their stories through film.

With this year's Future Creatives Initiative, starting in Victoria, we open the floor for emerging women screenwriters to submit their scripts to the competition.

Shortlisted entrants will be invited to pitch their story to our panel of judges in February 2019, in Melbourne.

The winner of the initiative will be awarded the “Emerging Screenwriter Award 2019” and their screenplay produced into a film with Taival Films.

The film produced will premiere at MWFF 2020.

Submissions for the initiative open Monday 24th of September, so get those creative brains writing!

THE PROCESS
All scripts submitted for the competition will be read by a panel of judges.
All scripts will be read by at least two individuals and points will be given according to the judging criteria. Judges will select a group of shortlisted Screenwriters that have received the highest points. All successful writers will be contacted personally and informed of their time of presentation at the Pitch Event.
These shortlisted writers will pitch their stories to a panel of three Mentors. The five-minute pitch presentations will take place in February 2019, during MWFF in Melbourne.
The Mentors will choose three writers, based on the pitch presentations, to be invited to be a part of the Future Creatives Initiative Mentoring Program.
The chosen three Screenwriters will hone their scripts with their Mentors during a course of two months. One of these scripts will then be chosen for production at the end of April 2019.
The successful script will be produced by Taival Films with an award budget of $5,000, and will be premiered at the MWFF 2020 festival.
